Vintage Photography

I remember going over to my Great Aunt’s home in Bristol, CT growing up and one of the things I loved to do the most while visiting was to view pictures from her parents.  Most of these dated back to the 1800s.  I admired the feel and I appreciated how they completely captured the essence of the time; forever trapped and exploited on paper.

These particular photos, along with my father’s love for photography, inspired me and my work.  Even today, I try hard to implement that feel and style into my photos.

I’ve spent countless hours studying these photos, not so much the process these photographers used to create the photo, instead I studied the feel, the emotion, and the surroundings to create the total package.

With my studies, one of the most prolific things I’ve been complimented on is my vintage style photographs and now I offer this service to the world.  If you want to see what you would look like back in the days of the Civil War to the turn of the century, let Dowd Studios take you on a time warp in the form of a photograph.

You will have fun walking back in time as we prepare you for your photo on the time frame of your choice.  We can suit you for the Antebellum period, the Edwardian Period, Victorian Period and any other period you wish to explore.  We will get you fitted for the most authentic feel costume, jewelry and setting to create a classic masterpiece.

PRICING

Because of the various costumes and jewelry for the different periods, the hair styles and makeup and we must also take into consideration the different sizes of people, we can’t give an exact price.  Please call for an estimate, however, the sitting will start at $100.00 including the finished product and increase from there depending on the variables.  Prices will not increase if we have the following:

  • Trade for hair and makeup stylist (Or if its needed at all)
  • Costumes we have already fit you and you and you wish to use them.

**Costumes we purchase specifically for your shoot, are yours to keep, unless we purchase the dress for our use – which we will state as FREE charge for the costume on your invoice – at which time those remain property of the studio.**

 

FINAL PRODUCT

Customers will receive a 4×6 mat finish photograph or rag paper photograph mounted on a Cabinet Card backing as seen from the period of 1875 to 1925

 

SITTING

Prior to shooting, Dowd Studios will need to meet with you to get a good idea of your measurements, facial and body structure to create the perfect photo.  Appointments must be made for this meeting before making the final appointment for the shoot.  ***Costumes may take some time to obtain especially if you wish to create a time frame before 1900, please allow enough time for this process ***

DISCLAIMER

Not every photo will look the same.   Certain people pull off a vintage feel better than others, we will do our best to work you though the process to capture that vintage feel.  Depending on the style and location (if applicable), these factors can delay the photo shoot.  We may need to take you shopping to find the RIGHT vintage costume, so please be prepared to shop.  Because of the time frame photos were not touched up (zits, wrinkles, etc…), therefore we will not touch these photos up with photoshop, we will add sepia tones to the black and white photo for the effect and that is the extent of the editing unless a classic background is need to be inserted.  We can and will add basic tones (Rouge cheeks) as past masters did on occasion but this will not be done unless asked.
